The best cafes in Phuket — a 2026 resident’s guide

If you live on Phuket, coffee is not a holiday. It is Tuesday morning before school run, Wednesday afternoon between meetings, Saturday brunch, Sunday breakfast, the reason you got out of bed on Monday. The right cafe matters — not in a lifestyle-magazine way, in a where-do-I-actually-spend-my-week way.

Phuket’s cafe scene has quietly become one of the strongest in Thailand outside Bangkok, and residents know it in a way that most visitors never see. This is our shortlist — the cafes that actually earn a place in a resident’s rotation. Anchor picks and neighbourhood spots across the island, chosen for coffee quality, atmosphere, and the specific thing that makes each one worth the trip.

The anchor pick — south end

The 2026 sister branch in Phuket Town takes the same idea and tunes it slightly urban — same single-bean discipline, slightly elevated preparation for the Old Town crowd, more parking than you’d expect. Both branches share the same principle: don’t try to be everything, do the thing you’re doing properly.

Cafes to know, by area

Rawai and Nai Harn

KenKen Coffee changed what “good coffee” means in the south. Before KenKen, the honest local answer was Wilsons, Boost or maybe Gallery. But since KenKen opened, they are — pound for pound — the strongest specialty operation in the south of the island. Multiple beans, multiple milks, the owner often on the floor, and delivery fast enough on Grab that half the neighbourhood orders in. If you’re a coffee head living anywhere from Nai Harn to Chalong, this is worth the trip.

Chalong

The Remedy is not a destination — it’s a rescue. Down a side alley in Soi Ta Iad (the Muay Thai soi), a few doors away from the noise, small enough that if two other people are inside you’re waiting for a table. The coffee is the best on the soi by a distance. Worth checking out if you’re nearby; probably not worth crossing the island for.

Asterisk Espresso landed in Chalong recently, following their Phangna and Phuket Town branches. Coffee-forward, no serious food, modern minimalist layout, parking at the back. Multiple beans, high-quality preparation, and one of the more consistent specialty setups on the island. The Phangna original built the reputation; the Chalong branch is honouring it.

Kathu

Dose Up Phuket is the neighbourhood cafe done right. Australian-style flat white, piccolo on the menu, one bean but the girls behind the counter are properly trained and the coffee is always fresh. Reasonably priced. This is your Kathu local — the place you go on a Wednesday afternoon because it’s five minutes down the road and it will not let you down.

Drop Espresso in Kathu (they also have a Phuket Town branch) is the busier alternative. Multiple beans, multiple options, a good range of cakes, and famously popular on Grab — order in the afternoon and it’s outside your gate faster than you expected. Gets crowded at weekends and after work, split evenly between Thais and expats.

Phuket Old Town

Campus Coffee Roasters is the old favourite. Middle of Old Town, popular with tourists on the weekend which makes parking a nightmare, but the coffee is why residents keep going back — Thai-owned specialty roastery, long menu, a serious pour-over programme. If you’re in Old Town on a weekday morning, this is still one of the best cups on the island.

Slumberland Brunch n Beans is the newer wave. Set in the eating complex right next to the Wilsons Phuket Town branch, multiple beans, minimalist modern layout, bakery on the side leaning Thai-specialty rather than Western. What Slumberland proves is that the Old Town coffee scene keeps expanding beyond the shophouse core — shops that would each hold up in Bangkok or Singapore. Parking easy because of the complex.

Graph Phuket is where the specialty crowd goes when they want to nerd out. Long menu, single-origin focus, a proper dessert programme running alongside the coffee. Parking’s a struggle because of the location, but if you’ve done your research on beans and you want the shop that will actually meet you at your level, Graph is it.

The Shelter Coffee Phuket sits on the way into Old Town from Central. Slightly awkward to find, comfortable parking once you do, and a solid range of coffee options. Good pit stop rather than destination cafe, but if you’re already driving that way, it earns the detour.

Kamala

Sync Coffee Bar & Roastery is the answer for the west coast. Tucked just off the main street with signage that helps if you’re paying attention, parking that’s a bit awkward, and by a distance the best coffee in the Kamala stretch. Modern setup, new, and playing at a level that the rest of the area hasn’t quite caught up to.

Bang Tao / Cherng Talay

Melbourne — Cafe, Roastery, Bakery is the reopened, rebranded operation from the founder of Phuket Coffee Lab, which longtime residents will remember as the first serious specialty roaster to open on the island back in 2010. Same roaster, expanded food programme, new location in the Bang Tao/Laguna corridor. Traffic in that stretch can be brutal; parking is limited but exists. Fast becoming the anchor breakfast-and-coffee spot for the north-west resident community. A quick guide — coffee-only vs coffee-with-food

Some cafes are for the coffee. Some are for the sit. Both are legitimate but they solve different problems.

If you want an excellent espresso and you’re in and out in five minutes: KenKen, Asterisk, Sync, Graph, Slumberland.

If you want to sit for two hours with a laptop or a book: Wilsons (either branch), Melbourne, Campus, Drop Espresso.

If you want breakfast or brunch that’s as good as the coffee: Wilsons (either branch), Melbourne, Drop Espresso.

If you want to nerd out on beans with someone who wants to nerd out with you: Graph, KenKen, Asterisk.

What we’re not including

Hotel cafes and beach-resort coffee bars are their own thing — they exist for a different audience and this list is written for people who live here. Same for the Patong tourist strip: there are honest cafes in Patong but they’re outnumbered by places optimised for people who won’t be back next week.

Kata and Karon get no picks in this piece, honestly. The good coffee in that corner of the island exists mostly inside resorts, and the standalone options skew tourist-facing. If you know a resident-facing spot in Kata or Karon we should look at, tell us at the bottom.

Chain coffee (Starbucks, Coffee Club, etc.) also doesn’t make the list. They exist; residents use them for the wifi and the predictability; nobody needs us to review them.
